Next June 19, the results of the study on the eradication of sexist violence in the media will be presented to the Catalan Association of Journalists. This study is a continuation of the one carried out in 2019, and has been prepared by the European Network of Women Journalists and the Feminist Journalism Association.
The results of the 2019 study indicated the need for permanent monitoring of how existing measures were being implemented to ensure the prevention of gender-based violence in the media.
The aim of this second study is to see if with the latest updates to Law 17/2020, of December 22, 2020, improvements have been incorporated in the practices of the media in Catalonia, and to observe if the weak points detected have been improved.
With the results of the II Study, a debate will be opened to promote the necessary improvements to be incorporated in the newsrooms, both for the treatment of information and for the prevention of sexist violence in the teams themselves. The role of the media is crucial as a point of reference in the public sphere, and its impact on public opinion is very relevant. Achieving committed means along the lines that are already defined both at the regional, national and international level in the fight against gender violence is essential to advance this priority objective, and therefore it is necessary to carry out studies like this and to debate the results with information and communication professionals, as well as with society in general.
Different organizations of journalists, women’s organizations, experts and representatives of the Ministry of Equality and Feminism of the Government of Catalonia, which supports the study, will participate in the event.
